What you’ll learn about in the Foundation Course

Emotional Awareness

In the first section of the Foundation course you’ll learn about emotional awareness. Awareness is the very first step on your path towards greater emotional intelligence and regulation skills. You’ll learn what emotions are and how you personally feel them in your body as well as get an understanding of your emotional state patterns.

Emotional Activation

In the second section of the Foundation Course, you’ll begin to understand the stages of nervous system activation and start to identify your own activation patterns and triggers. This will shed light on what activation looks like for you so that it doesn’t have to be scary anymore. You can feel more confident in knowing what’s happening in your body at any given point in time.

Emotional Regulation

In the final section of the Foundation course, you’ll put all the knowledge you’ve gained to use. You’ll learn specific coping skills and develop your own personalized coping strategy tailored specifically to your needs. You’ll be able to practice these skills and gain trust in your ability to handle stressors and emotions in the future.

What do the terms Emotional Awareness, Emotional Activation, and Emotional Regulation mean and why are they important to me?

That’s a great question! These concepts are crucial in understanding and managing our emotions effectively. Let’s explore what the terms Emotional Awareness, Emotional Activation, and Emotional Regulation mean.

Emotional Awareness

Emotional Awareness refers to our ability to recognize and understand our own emotions. It involves paying attention to our feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations in order to gain a deeper understanding of what is happening within us. By cultivating this awareness, we can become more attuned to our emotional experiences and how they impact our thoughts and behaviors.

Emotional Activation

Emotional Activation, on the other hand, refers to the intensity and energy associated with our emotions. It relates to the physiological and neurological responses that occur when we experience or recall emotional events. Sometimes, our emotions can become overwhelming or trigger intense bodily sensations. Understanding emotional activation helps us recognize these heightened states and learn how to navigate them more skillfully.

Emotional Regulation

Emotional Regulation involves the ability to effectively manage and modulate our emotions. It means learning to respond to our emotions in a balanced and constructive way, rather than being overwhelmed or controlled by them. Emotional regulation empowers us to navigate challenging situations, make rational decisions, and maintain healthy relationships.

These terms are crucial because they offer us a roadmap for understanding and addressing our emotional well-being. By developing emotional awareness, we can start to identify patterns, triggers, and underlying causes of our emotions. This self-awareness forms the foundation for emotional regulation, as we gain the ability to respond to our emotions in a way that aligns with our values and goals. Emotional activation, in turn, helps us recognize when our emotions are becoming heightened or dysregulated, allowing us to implement strategies to self-soothe and bring ourselves back into a state of balance.

By developing these emotional skills, we become more resilient and empowered in our lives. We gain a greater sense of control over our emotional experiences, rather than feeling overwhelmed or controlled by them. This level of emotional intelligence enhances our overall well-being and strengthens our relationships, as we are better equipped to understand ourselves and empathize with others. As a clinician with years of experience in this work, I am here to support and guide you in developing these skills and understanding yourself at a deeper level. By engaging in the Foundation Course, we can help you cultivate emotional awareness, manage emotional activation effectively, and regulate your emotions in a way that empowers you to thrive.
